5 Digital Products You Can Create in Canva to Earn Extra Cash
If you’re here, you’re probably looking to learn about different types of products you can create using Canva and sell online for extra income, including passive income. Whether you're just starting out or unsure about which products are the best fit, this blog will break it down for you. By the end, you'll have a clearer direction for which digital products to focus on.
Having sold over 9,000 digital products myself, I’ve compiled a list of five products you can easily create with Canva. These are all products I’ve personally sold, and I'll share insights and tips for creating each one. And no, you don’t need any prior design skills to sell on Canva!
1. Printable Planners
When I started, I focused on selling printable planners, and I highly recommend it. Creating and selling printable planners is a simple way to begin in the world of digital products. It teaches you essential skills in design and execution, while also helping you understand what works in the market.
What is a printable planner, and how do you create one?
A printable planner is a document you design in Canva, typically starting with a blank US Letter-size layout. Once your design is complete, save it as a PDF, and that’s your product! Simple, right? Well, while the process is straightforward, the real challenge lies in creating a planner that resonates with your niche (choosing the right niche is critical!).
Top tips for selling printable planners:
Choose your niche wisely: While you don’t have to stick to a single niche forever, it's easier to focus on an area you're familiar with or passionate about. For example, I started with business, marketing, and social media planners because I had knowledge in those areas.
Do market research: This is crucial for any product. Make sure there’s demand for your planner before investing time into it. Market research helps you understand your competition and what will set your product apart.
Get a proofreader: Avoid the embarrassment of customers pointing out spelling mistakes in your printable planners. Hire someone to proofread, ensuring your products are professional and error-free.
2. Instagram Templates
Instagram templates are another popular digital product. These are editable Canva designs that buyers can modify to suit their own branding or business. You can create general templates or niche-specific ones like templates for hairstylists, beauticians, or coaches. When I started selling Instagram templates two years ago, my first product was a pink engagement post bundle, which sold well.
Top tips for selling Instagram templates:
Go niche: While engagement packs and general templates can sell, niche templates often sell better and more quickly. Focus on a specific target market to stand out.
Don’t overdo it: You don’t need 1,000 templates in one pack to make an impact. Unique, high-quality templates often outperform larger, cheaper bundles.
Bundle wisely: Combine post templates and story templates into separate products and offer them as a bundle to increase exposure and sales.
3. Canva Planner Templates
Canva planner templates are becoming increasingly popular and, for now, the market isn't oversaturated. Even when it does become more competitive, there are still ways to stand out.
With Canva planner templates, you create a customizable planner that your customers can edit within Canva. These templates are often sold with a commercial or limited commercial license, allowing customers to resell their edited versions while preventing the resale of the original template.
Top tips for selling Canva planner templates:
Be clear about the license: Ensure your terms of use and license conditions are clear. You don’t want someone reselling an exact copy of your template.
Keep it simple: Customers often prefer clean, straightforward designs they can easily customize. Overly complex designs may deter buyers who are looking for simplicity.
4. One-Pagers
One-pagers are simple, one- or two-page printable documents you can sell. They’re quick to create and are a great entry point if you're just getting started.
For example, I sold an order form for $2 back in 2019, and while I didn’t make a huge profit ($800 from 400 sales), it significantly increased traffic to my shop and led to more sales of higher-priced items.
Top tips for one-pagers:
Don’t overthink it: This advice applies to all digital designs but is especially true for one-pagers. Use these as opportunities to experiment with styles and fonts.
Use one-pagers for market research: Test out different designs and styles with one-pagers to see what resonates with your audience. Then, you can apply these learnings to more extensive products like planners.
5. Guides or Workbooks
Guides and workbooks combine information with actionable steps or tools to help customers learn or achieve something. This type of product is highly valuable because not everyone has the knowledge you do. While they may take a bit more time to create, they often face less competition.
For example, I created a guide with 200 content ideas, which is available for purchase. It’s concise yet highly useful, and it has sold well.
Top tips for selling guides or workbooks:
Be clear on the topic: Make sure you have the knowledge and expertise to teach the subject you're covering. Guides or workbooks that don’t deliver value won't succeed.
Start small: You don’t need a 100-page guide to be successful. My 200 content ideas guide is short and affordable, and it has sold a lot because it’s practical and to the point.
Conclusion:
These five digital products—printable planners, Instagram templates, Canva planner templates, one-pagers, and guides or workbooks—are great ways to start generating extra income with Canva.
